State GIS Data Spotlight - Alaska Geospatial Data Clearinghouse

Alaska State Geo-spatial Data Clearinghouse (ASGDC) provides the community with access to online maps, Data on CDs, and secure GIS data by State agency. The Alaska State Geo-spatial Data Clearinghouse (ASGDC) provides an electronic pathway for the public to access a wide variety of information in the form of maps, images and descriptions about Alaska geo-spatial data. This site is developed as a "node" on the growing framework of public sites across the nation which together constitute the electronic back-bone of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.
As of February 5, 2008 all maps offered on this web site are in the NAD83 datum only
Currently, the following datasets are available:
- Biological
Contains anadromous fish species and steams metadata
- Boundaries
Contains statewide boundary metadata, including but not limited to the following
boundaries: coastal district, administrative large parcel, borough, election district,
incorporated city, recording district, and state park trail and unit
- Cultural
Contains Alaska Place Name, city, populated place and recording office
metadata
- DNR Land Records
Contains base, land estate, mineral estate, ownership, surface classification
and water estate metadata
- Environmental
Contains statewide Environmental Sensitivity Index metadata
- General Land Status
Contains statewide land ownership metadata
- Geoscience
Contains Minerals Data Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) data set
metadata
- Graticule
Contains graticule metadata, including but not limited to the following: survey
monument, nautical chart, state plane zone, UTM zone, Public Land Survey
System, and USGS Quadrangle
- Natural Resources
Contains aquaculture and tidelands, mining and oil and gas metadata
- Physical Features
Contains coast, elevation, glacier, hydrography and volcano metadata
- Transportation
Contains airport and runway, Alaska Marine Highway, infrastructure, pipeline,
power line, railroad, road, telephone line and trail metadata
The Department of Natural Resources manages all state-owned land, water and natural resources, except for fish and game, on behalf of the people of Alaska. When all land conveyances from the federal government are completed, the people of the state will own land and resources on 104 million acres: Approximately 90 million acres have been conveyed so far. The state owns approximately 65 million acres of tidelands, shorelands, and submerged lands and manages 34,000 miles of coastline. The state also owns the freshwater resources of the state, a resource that equals about 40% of the entire nation's fresh water.
All boundaries are UTM NAD83, the Metadata is in html format. The .E00 files are in standard USFWS data exchange format http://www.fws.gov/data/ & http://alaska.fws.gov/

This prototype Alaska Geospatial Data Clearinghouse is being developed and maintained at the USGS EROS Alaska Field Office. FTP and http data access available. A MUST VISIT!
