- Global Seeps database is a cost-effective risk-ranking tool for new exploration
25th July 2008 - Infoterra Ltd, a leader in the provision of geographic information products and services, has announced the availability of satellite mapping identifying oil slick data for petroleum exploration rounds for offshore India and Bangladesh.
Infoterra has screened over 3 million square km of offshore India, including the NELP VII offshore exploration blocks, and all 28 blocks - 8 shallow water blocks and 20 deep sea blocks - in the offshore Bangladesh licensing round. Within all of this data over 1,000 oil slicks have been located, with several areas showing high confidence repeatability.
Infoterra's Global Seeps database provides oil seep information valuable to exploration companies for locating possible sites of oil accumulation. Infoterra characterises and ranks the slicks as probable natural seepage or man made pollution, and also maps rigs, platforms and ship traffic for a complete picture. Immediate access and availability of this oil seeps database, either on a local, regional or global basis, provides customers with precise and detailed information when required.
Infoterra's global coverage of offshore basins (approximately 60 million square km) has been constructed by interpreting radar satellite data and screening offshore basins worldwide to a water depth of c. 3,000 metres. The database is made up of over 12,800 ERS satellite equivalent scenes. The database is already used by many major international oil companies as a powerful exploration tool to analyse the probability of a mature source rock and an active petroleum system being present, saving both time and money.
