New York, June 19, 2008 - Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC, the leading global risk and reinsurance specialist, today announced the launch of the Guy Carpenter Asia-Pacific Climate Impact Centre at City University of Hong Kong.
The Centre, which will serve as the leading regional hub for climate research, aims to help Asia-Pacific countries and regions better understand climate-related threats, assess catastrophic risk and provide predictions on severe climatic events.
“As the world’s premier catastrophe reinsurance broker, Guy Carpenter is pleased to contribute to fostering regional knowledge exchange in relation to climate-related perils,” said Britt Newhouse, Chairman of Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC. “In addition to our financial support for the Centre, we are also devoting our industry expertise in the areas of data assessment, catastrophe modelling and risk management techniques to spearhead climate research and innovation strategies that will benefit the entire Asia-Pacific region.”
City University of Hong Kong is a pioneer in the research of typhoons and monsoons in the Asia-Pacific region. Building on its existing strengths and with the support of Guy Carpenter, the Centre will ensure the University’s continued leadership in climate change studies.
“Over the years we have been actively engaged in applied research that responds to the needs of industry, commerce and the community,” said Professor Way Kuo, President of City University. “With the generous assistance from Guy Carpenter, the Centre will further strengthen our capabilities, with the potential to benefit many millions of people across the region.”
The primary objectives of the Centre are to enhance both the understanding of the science of climate-related perils in Asia-Pacific and the ability to predict their occurrence to benefit the people in the region. To achieve these ends, several research activities have been initiated, including the study of the winter monsoon season over China and the development of methods to predict climate-related catastrophes on seasonal, annual or semi-decadal time scales.
