Rapid Response by 3001 Helps Assess Flood Damage in Two States PDF Print E-mail
Written by 3001

3001 tasked by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District to capture aerial imagery of flooded rivers during recent record-setting rainstorms.

May 5, 2008 – Fairfax, VA – 3001, the geospatial company ®, today announced the successful completion and delivery of digital aerial imagery to the U.S. Corps of Engineers (USACE) Little Rock District to aid in their emergency response after record-setting rainstorms flooded the banks of two large rivers in sections of Arkansas and Missouri.

On Friday, March 21st, the USACE Little Rock District signed an emergency task order for 3001 to collect aerial photography for the areas of the White River in Arkansas and the Black River, in southeastern Missouri.  3001’s rapid response team mobilized from its working location in southern Louisiana to the junction of the White River and Black River near Newport, Arkansas within twelve hours of notification.  On Saturday, March 22nd, they flew forty-one linear flight lines in less than seven hours, covering a 733-mile area and collected almost 100% cloud-free photography.

Using two Z/I Digital Mapping Cameras (DMC), 3001 collected 1,694 frames of imagery to produce 1-foot pixel RGB orthorectified orthophotography and delivered it swiftly to the Corps for their evaluation.  Turn around time, from acquisition of the imagery to delivery of raw images made available to the Corps via an FTP site, was five days.  One week later, completion of orthorectified data was delivered to the Corps.  Dan Burke, Sensor Operations Manager of 3001 Airborne Solutions remarked, “We have a great team.  Communication between ground and flight crews meant both DMC ships could capture the maximum amount of data in the shortest time frame possible allowing us to successfully complete this [acquisition] project in one day.”

3001 supports State and Federal Government agencies in disaster preparedness and response.  During natural disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, state and local government officials required detailed aerial imagery, accurate surveys, and detailed maps to help support disaster recovery efforts.  3001 was contracted to provide services and deliverables including digital imagery, LiDAR, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), geodetic controls, and topographic surveys.
