HOLBECK ON GOOGLE EARTH - Architecturally detailed 3D digital model of Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds, launched on Google Earth.
Holbeck Urban Village is one of the UK’s earliest centres of the Industrial Revolution and has been the focus of major regeneration and inward investment activity designed to breathe life back into the previously neglected industrial heartland of Leeds.
Covering 6.5km of streets and an area of over 25 hectares, the Holbeck model is one of the largest, most accurate and photo-realistic interactive models of its kind to be hosted on Google Earth.
The interactive 3D digital model was produced by AMT3D using the latest long distance laser scanning technology and, until now, was available for viewing on-line via streaming technology or distributed by interactive CD. The original purpose of the model was for use in the planning and public consultation processes involved in the regeneration of the area, however, since inception, so many more applications have become clear, including onscreen simulation of emergency and security sensitive scenarios. The inclusion of this model on Google Earth opens up a huge opportunity for developers and businesses involved in the regeneration area to showcase The Holbeck Urban Village to a worldwide audience.
Holbeck3D is a development that will undoubtedly be followed by more and more towns and cities, as planners and architects reap the tremendous benefits of being able to design, plan and interact with the future urban environment on-screen and in 3D.
The Holbeck model can now be viewed via the online global 3D mapping technology of Google Earth, which combines the power of Google Search with up to date satellite imagery, maps, terrain and 3D buildings to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips.
The unique City model of this key regeneration area of Leeds is the second AMT3D city model to be chosen by Google for incorporation within this innovative GIS platform. (Note: you must download the latest Google Earth update and turn on the ‘3D Buildings’ and terrain layers)
About AMT3D
AMT3D specialise in the production of interactive photo-realistic and architecturally accurate 3D digital computer models of the built environment using the latest state of the art long distance laser scanning hardware and software technology.
It is a private limited company based in Ireland. The company also has an office in the UK and strategic partners in Europe & the Far East. The company originated as a spin-off from the University of Leeds.
AMT3D models enable professionals to calculate the local and environmental impact of proposed development schemes, quantifying the effects of massing and shading as well as highlighting issues such as rights of light, as well as understanding the potential problems of project management and servicing the proposed development site.
AMT3D’s models also assist in the marketing of proposed schemes as potential users can view the surrounding streets / countryside from within the proposed new structures, long before anything is built or even approved for building. The fact that AMT3D digital models can be hosted on the web and Google Earth is also a significant benefit when considering the marketing and public consultation processes.
The addition of embedded digital objects such as web hyperlinks opens up a whole host of opportunities regarding marketing and commercial advertising.
Finally, due to the highly accurate nature of AMT3D urban models, they provide significant and unique benefits in the archiving of building information and when coupled with our state of the art simulation software have important applications in the wider areas of security, emergency & event planning as well as facilities management.
