Public Service Company of New Mexico Receives GITA Innovator Award E-mail
Written by ESRI
27 April 2004
Redlands, California—Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) received a 2004 Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) Innovator Award. The award is presented to organizations for their outstanding contribution and long-standing commitment to the geospatial industry.

PNM is the largest provider of electricity and gas in the state of New Mexico.

"PNM prides itself on using the latest technology and innovation in service to its customers," said Ted Kircher, GIS coordinator, Public Service Company of New Mexico. "It is exciting to experience success knowing that this technology has the ability to not only support achieving current goals but also to provide support for future endeavors."

PNM received the award for its use of geographic information system (GIS) technology to improve utility processes, increase efficiency and productivity, and create new ways for effectively disseminating and using spatial and related tabular information. PNM's GIS staff changed the way GIS applications were managed at all levels of its organization, for both individuals and departments, and across the enterprise. PNM's vision was to create a single, centralized GIS repository where applications and data would be easily maintained and accessible. The result was streamlined business processes; more accurate, up-to-date asset and network management; and better regulatory compliance.

PNM worked with POWER Engineers using ESRI ArcGIS software for its Transmission Asset Management Information System (TAMIS), which is used for electric and gas transmission. TAMIS also has the ability to display current environmental and landowner (right-of-way) information as well as computer-aided design (CAD) drawings and up-to-date scanned images of all utility drawings. In addition, the company uses ESRI GIS software as the basis for its statewide Automated Mapping and Integrated Gas Operations (AMIGO) application, which is used for Department of Transportation and regulatory compliance. Now in its first stage of rollout, the application standardizes operations as well as improves communication and information exchange between regulatory agencies and PNM management.

The GITA Innovator Award represents the evolution of GITA's original Pioneer Award, which recognized the achievements of early adopters of GIS technology. With the growth and maturity of today's geospatial industry, the current award recognizes the unique and significant contributions of user organizations that have pushed the envelope of geospatial technology through innovative development of a technology, service, or application. Nominations are open to any user organization including government agencies and nonprofits.

The award was presented at GITA's 27th Annual Conference. This year's event was held April 25-28 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington. GITA is a nonprofit educational association serving the global geospatial community.
