Celebrating Geography Awareness Week and GISDay 2007 PDF Print E-mail

According to GISDay.com, more than 800 events are planned around the World - and no doubt there's many more that aven't registered. Celebrate GISDay by sharing your GIS tales, tips, and expertise with others in an effort to make 2007 GISDay the best ever. GIS Day is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI. GISDay is part of Geography Awareness week, Nov 12-18, 2007 - Happy GISDay!

GISDay.com is your homebase for news and events about GIS Day 2007. They tell us that With the signing of a GIS Day proclamation on Nov. 1, Forsyth County kicked off its two-week celebration of GIS Day activities.

Other events as described by the GISDay crew:
# The Greenbelt Movement will hold an Open House in Nairobi, Kenya.
# Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet, Minnesota, will host an Open House with a geography quiz, a student-led geocache hike and demonstration, and treats.
# ESRI Lebanon is conducting a series of GIS Days during the month of November entitled "Technology Awareness" as part of its GIS Awareness Month. These events will be held in multiple universities all over Lebanon.
# Nepal GIS Society in Patan, Nepal, will hold an Open House.
# American Samoa Department of Commerce in Pago Pago will feature "The Affects of Population in American Samoa" and "Connecting Our Islands and Our People."
# NAVTEQ will host GIS Day presentations at Chicago's Field Museum for students as well as the general public.

ISU GIS Day Chili Cook-Off - This year's event will be bigger and better than ever before. Our trivia contest is back along with the Northern Rockies URISA Chili Cook-Off. In addition, there will be presentations, demonstrations, and for the first time ever, we are hosting the annual Geo-spatial Range Sciences Conference on GIS Day as well! Come see GIS in operation. Meet GIS professionals and our GIS students, ask questions, and even try some GIS activities yourself. Refreshments will be served. See http://giscenter.isu.edu/gisday/

UW-Madison GIS Day Expo 2007 - GIS Day at the UW will feature over 40 organizations from the private and public sectors who will demonstrate GIS applications and new technological innovations via exhibitor booths, presentations and a map gallery. There will also be a "Kid's Corner" this year with special interactive children's activities.  In addition to the Expo, an introductory GIS workshop will be held on Friday, November 16th in Science Hall for university students and adult members of the general public.

University of New Hampshire GIS Day 2007 - On Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 the New Hampshire Space Grant Consortium and Complex Systems Research Center will be hosting their ninth annual GIS Day Conference and College Fair at the Institute for the Study of Earth Oceans and Space at the University of New Hampshire. Invited guests to this year's GIS Day conference include hundreds of high school junior and senior level students, Geo-Spatial Science professionals, university students and members of the general public. Anticipated attendance for the day is expected to top off at over eight hundred participants from all over Northern New England.

GIS Day at IU - At IU�s local event, GIS professionals from the Bloomington area will give brief presentations on topics including geotagging�a practice that integrates geographical information with other media like historical photographs�the environmental applications of GIS, and the Indiana properties database, a real estate tool. Visitors can also talk to professionals and educators about the GIS job market and training opportunities, internet mapping, ongoing projects and any of the other ways that GIS technologies are shaping the way we live, learn and do business.

GIS Day 2007 at Oregon State U. - OSU's GIS Day activities are sponsored by the Department of Geosciences, the Department of Forest Science (in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service and the USGS), and the OSU Valley Library. Planned is a special program for ~420 students teachers, and parents from Linus Pauling, Cheldelin, and Lincoln middle schools, as well as a classes from Pilgrim Lutheran School in Beaverton and St. Mary's School in Albany. In addition, students from Corvallis High School will be helping to lead the middle-schoolers on their GPS hikes.
