GISuser Spotlight... 10 cool things about Definiens Software PDF Print E-mail
Written by GISuser
20 October 2007

Definiens Developer: a powerful integrated development environment designed for the image analysis challenges facing the earth observation and remote sensing community. It facilitates and accelerates the development of a vast range of image analysis applications, allowing users to identify the image objects and the relations between those objects on multiple levels. USers around the globe are using this solution for Natural Resource Management, Infrastructure Planning, Security and Emergency Response, and many other applications. We'll now continue our 10 cool things spotlight by sharing with you 10 cool things about Definiens Software.

10 cool things about Definiens Software

1. Automatic extraction of information
Definiens Developer allows generating rule sets in which knowledge about image content is described. Once a rule set is written, it can be applied to an arbitrary number of images automatically.

2. Generation of repeatable models
Rule sets capable of solving a specific image analysis task can be repeatedly applied other images of the same type. This leads to more objective and consistent results, independent of the human factor encountered when manually extracting information from images.

3. High scalability
With the Definiens eCognition Server, Definiens offers production capability ranging from a single PC use to a full blown production environment. Terabytes of data can be automatically analyzed while the service-oriented architecture allows flexible system scaling depending on user needs.

4. Expert knowledge can be made usable by non experts
One of the unique features of the software is that rule sets can be wrapped into components, which are fitted with simple-to-use interfaces. This way a rule set developed by an imaging specialist can be applied by an end user who does not need to be an imaging expert.

5. Easy integration into existing workflows
With its extension to ArcGIS and automation API, Definiens offers all functionality needed to smoothly integrate into an existing workflow.

6. Context based
One of the most powerful features of the Definiens software is the fact that it is context based. Within the classification, the image object context can be leveraged to identify areas not distinguishable merely by its color, shape or texture. For example features like vegetation types only present in the vicinity of water areas for example can be easily pointed out.

7. Problems posed by pixel based systems are overcome
Especially with very high resolution data, pixel based analysis reaches limitations. Land cover classes can no longer be attributed to an individual pixel. By generating homogeneous image areas, so called image objects, these limitations can be overcome. In addition to the simple pixel value, attributes like shape, texture or context can be leveraged to produce much better results.

8. Multi scale approach
When analyzing an image a lot of information is actually represented in different scales. Definiens can provide differently scaled objects in parallel allowing extracting features of differing scale such as forested area and individual trees.

9. Solution to data fusion problems
Merging data of differing scales and from different source has traditionally posed a considerable challenge. By leveraging the object based approach, this hurdle is removed. This is achieved by decoupling the object generation and the classification processes. As a result, objects can be generated based on one data source and analyzed based on another.

10. Integration of vector and raster
Definiens ability to ingest vector data facilitates a multitude of applications. Vector data can be used in many ways: As a priori information, to detect changes, to check vector data accuracy, to calibrate rule sets and much more.

With Definiens, users can explore images, identify the objects within them and the relations between those objects on multiple levels. As a result, they can extract intelligence from the image as a whole.
