Realizing The Possibilities of Autodesk Map 3D in Denver PDF Print E-mail
Written by Glenn Letham
Wednesday, 19 September 2007
I recently spent a day in Denver where I took in the Autodesk Realize Your Possibilities event - a travelling roadshow put on by Autodesk staff.

The event served to inform users and would-be users about the possibilities brought about by using the latest apps - in my case, I took in the Geospatial track which looked at the GIS solutions - AutoCAD Map 3D, Raster Design, MapGuide, and Design Review.

Some of the coolest features available to users of the AutoCAD Map 3D solution include:
- fast data access enabled via the FDO technology - we saw a 1.5 GB image draw, redraw etc.. in seconds - on a normal laptop!
- simple output to DWF or publish to the web - author and serve to MapGuide session in seconds
- viewing DWF within the free AutoCAD design review enabling layers, redlines, measure tools, geographic coordinates, view attributes, and even plug-in a GPS!
- native read/write of multiple data formats include ESRI
- simple command access and access to GIS data analysis tools (ie. fast query building, thematic map production, and output)
I could go on but I'll have to wait till I pour over my notes and handouts. Nice job to Pete Southwood or Autodesk (aka. the Male version of Lynn Allen!)

More about AutoCAD Map 3D 2008:

What it's all about... a tool to create and manage your spatial data. Simply put, the application is famous for bridging the gap between CAD and GIS. Users are provided with direct access to data (supporting many common formats) and perhaps most important, they get to work with familiar tools in a familiar environment (AutocAD)

Map 3D provides:
- native access to CAD, GIS, raster and other data formats via FDO technology
- CAD tools enable precision editing of your GIS data
- provides GIS tools for map creation and stylization
- powerful open data management tools
- enables direct publishing via MapGuide or MapGuide Open Source (See osgeo.org)

Other cool offerings:

Workspace views enable users to work in the environment of choice... Map "classic", simple (for basic/novice users), or a completely customized environment (advanced users).

A very cool info center provides access to help files, a best practices guide, white papers, the knowledge base, discussion groups and more. This takes help to a whole new level!

Using Map 3D will help users to avoid costly data loss, data conversion, and data copies (redundancy)

Best of all, users are invited to try all the AutoCAD products for free via fully functional evals!
