Spotlight on TerraLook - Satellite imagery from the USGS to view a changing world  E-mail
Written by USGS
25 July 2007
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is pleased to announce the release of the TerraLook data product. A TerraLook product is a user-specified collection of JPEG images created from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) images from the NASA Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center, and Tri-Decadal Global Landsat Orthorectified images from the USGS archive.

TerraLook will serve GIS, natural resource management, education, and other communities, and provide easily accessible remotely-sensed data. TerraLook images are designed for visual interpretation and display, and are of value to anyone who wants to see the changes to the Earth's surface over the last 30 years.

TerraLook products are available through the USGS Global Visualization Viewer at no cost to the user. Please visit the TerraLook web site to learn more about TerraLook collections.

TerraLook builds on the success of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Protected Area Archive project with additional support from The Nature Conservancy, the World Bank Development Grant Facility's Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network Connectivity Project, the U.S. State Department, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Amazon Protected Area Network project, and the World Conservation Union.

TerraLook images can be viewed in any program that can open JPEG images. Examples include web browers, word processors, and graphic software. A Viewer and Toolkit designed for use with TerraLook Collections can be downloaded from http://terralook.sourceforge.net/
