Written by Glenn Letham
Tuesday, 03 July 2007 The popular Penn State University has recently added to their growing portfolio of geospatial education programs - enter the Post baccalaureate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence offered by the school's Department of Geography in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. This program is idea for working professionals who need to apply their GIS skills to national security, disaster response, environmental response, and industrial settings. This 14 credit program consists of five online courses offered on a semester schedule along with a final course that offers a chance to take a virtual field experience. Of note, all of credits earned in the Penn State Certificate programs can be applied towards a master's degree (PSU does offer a Masters in GIS).
About the Program The demand for professionals in the geospatial intelligence field is global and continues to grow at a high rate in both government and industry. This online certificate program is designed to improve your skills in geospatial technology, spatial thinking, and information literacy. You can learn to combine those skills with knowledge of cultural and political geography to solve problems that your employer considers critical. You can do all this according to your own schedule, studying where and when it's most convenient for you.
Learn from GIS Leaders Due to the specialized nature of the course content, Penn State has identified and partnered with experienced educators to provide instruction for two of the five required courses. In every course you will interact online with highly respected faculty members from Penn State's top-rated graduate programs in geographic information science, or from other distinguished institutions.
Achieve Cutting-Edge Credentials Gain both hands-on technical experience and the analytical skills needed to apply what you have learned in the most essential real-world geospatial intelligence sectors.
Get a Head Start on a Master's Degree Our curriculum is designed so that credits earned in this certificate program may be applied toward the master's degree, should a student be granted admission into the master's program.
Curriculum: Geographic Foundations of Geospatial Intelligence Remote Sensing for the Geospatial Intelligence Professional GIS for the Geospatial Intelligence Professional Introduction to Multi-Sensor Data Fusion Virtual Field Excercise for the Geospatial Intelligence Professional
Other PSU Graduate or Postbaccalaureate Certificates : Disaster Preparedness (Graduate Certificate) Geographic Information Systems (Postbaccalaureate Certificate) Geospatial Intelligence (Postbaccalaureate Certificate)
