Written by Glenn LEtham (GISuser)
Wednesday, 27 June 2007 Since 2005, IMC has been capturing 360 degree georeferenced spherical video of North America’s major cities enabling everyone to experience terrestrial views from every angle. The company, currently getting loads of exposure for providing Google with their cool and sometimes controvercial Street View data has been driving the country in VW Bugs housing the IMC Dodeca camera which capture the 360 degree imagery. According to the company, they are expanding their coverage of North American cities and expanding to Europe. Initially developed for the energy and utilities sector, GeoImmersive video from Immersive Media Company (IMC) is being adopted by many users for many interesting uses.
From coast to coast, IMC has captured 360° spherical movies of:
- Downtown cores - Tourist attractions - Business or Commercial Centers - Airports - High growth and developing neighborhoods - Sports facilities and arenas
To date, IMC's GeoImmersive Database consists of more than 40,000 miles in North America and the company has expanded the collection of GeoImmersive imagery to include additional North American cities and points of interest as well as major European locations. The ability to integrate with a database or GIS applications, as well as stream 360 degree imagery on the web, provides significant additional value to customer who are familiar with traditional aerial or satellite imagery applications.
About the Camera IMC's Dodeca 2360 Camera System is a compact, lightweight, unified camera system that generates synchronized high resolution video streams representing a full-motion spherical world, complete with directional sound, that can be experienced live or in a recorded form. IMC's patented approach covers image capture, display and distribution.
The camera head is one unified camera system made up of 11 lenses and sensors configured according to a dodecahedron.

Recall the Google Street View Win Street View is a new feature of Google Maps (announced May, 2007) that enables users to view and navigate within 360 degree street level imagery of various cities in the US. Street View provides users with a rich, immersive browsing experience directly in Google Maps, enabling greater understanding of a specific location or area. Street View imagery will initially be available for maps of the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Las Vegas, Denver and Miami, and will soon expand to other metropolitan areas. By clicking on the "Street View" button in Google Maps, users can navigate street level, panoramic imagery.
