Some random notes from the session on AWX 2 -- Recall recently ArcWeb explorer 2 beta 1 released last week - See arcwebservices.com labs
ArcWeb Services AWX2 is built on Adobe Flex 2 2 APIs – javascript and Flex 2 ActrionScript API Simple authoring where anyone with a notepad should be able to author an ArcMap web service (Source: AWX dev team)
New Features in AWX2 - more map types… tiled streets (ArcGIS online), topo, shaded relief. Streets, aerial and hybrid always been there - support for 13 diff projections (repro on the fly) - create your own widgets (think Apple) - using Flex API the map can be completely customized (via style sheets)
Performance - flash player 9 is much faster than flash player 8 - tiled data sources load much faster
Get started using Quick Start (those new to AWX) and via Quick Start Plus Quick – basic map embedding, add markers, built in map types, overlays.
Simple sample codes... add a marker or add custom polyline (define location, style, and properties)
TIP -- AJAX development libraries – see www.prototypejs.org Script.aculo.us – showing you how to create nice smooth drag and drop maps for your web apps. See sample code on Lab site.
Locate position via telephone number, IP, or www address – imagine locating the users of your website. Or view IP address location of attacks ass indicated by your server logs.
DEVELOPING WITH ActionScript – Flex 2 - flex 2 offers many improvements over Flex 1.5 - Flex 2 uses Eclipse IDE - Powerful built-in components like panels, datagrids, charting - Excellent network connectivity - No server side web app required
Cool flex demos.. 2 maps side-by-side showing diff data types.. map centers are tied to each other so panning is seamless and synched on both screens. Cool demo – change map projection on the fly for your webmap, lat/long value is easily identified from the mouse location using any projection. AWX 2 layers: Vector group layer – fast vector maps Rastertile layer – tiled maps Mapimage grouplayer – traditional maps via SOAP Thematic grouplayer – thematic map layer Querylayer – spatial query for markers Overlaylayer – hold any kind of overlay
The swiss army knife of webmap authoring… GeoRSS, ArcGIS, ArcIMS support by the end of July (Beta 2)
90 day free trial account is available online at arcwebservices.com - bottom line cost for getting in is $1200 (limited number of credits are provided - ie. each geocode conducted costs a credit etc...)
