MODIS Rapid Response system and wildfire mapping resources   PDF  Print  E-mail
Written by Glenn Letham
Wednesday, 16 May 2007
The MODIS Rapid Response system http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/ has been developed to provide rapid access to MODIS data globally, with initial emphasis on 250m color composite imagery and active fire data. Imagery and data are now being provided to a number of users such as the USFS Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC), the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), the U.N. Global Fire Monitoring Center, and NASA's Earth Observatory. Read on for more on MODIS web mapping partners and for other useful wildfire mapping resources.

Web Mapping & Collaboration

The site provides access to a number of web mapping systems including:

Web Fire Mapper - The Web Fire Mapper at the University of Maryland provides access to current and archived fire locations detected by the MODIS Rapid Response System through an interactive ArcIMS interface with an extensive database of region-specific layers and ancillary information.

Active Fire Maps - The USFS's Remote Sensing Applications Center generates regional maps for the US fire managers using the active fire locations provided by the MODIS Rapid Response System, and also makes them available through an interactive ArcIMS interface over the conterminous United States, Alaska, and Canada.

Global Fire Maps - Global 10-day fire maps are generated using the MODIS Rapid Response fire locations to represent the current fire activity across the world.

In search of other wild fire mapping resources. The following are some great leads on Active Fire Mapping Resources and GIS products. Once source of information for those down south is the the Florida Data Sharing Network (http://gis-data.blogspot.com). They recently listed several GIS fire data download sites, plus some other fire related resources users may find useful.

For some of these sites users may have to contact an agent in order to see if they have a full GIS database available for consumption
