2007 BE Awards Recognize Expertice in GIS and Geospatial Technologies   PDF  Print  E-mail

What do the Oldham Metro Burough Council, CROtec (Netherlands), The Dept. of Planning and Infrastructure Western Australia, Dallas Water Utilities, Auckland City Council, The City of Milwaukee Wisconsin, The Port of Brisbane, and the Dutch Ministry of Finance have in common? They all have huge infrastrucure projects or environmental concerns and problems that are being solved using Geospatial solutions from Bentley. They were also entered and chasing a prize in the recent BE Awards.

The Oldham Metropolitan Burough Council had a need to incorporate Oracle, SQL, and MapInfo data into their system… typically it was tough for them to access their data. A solution was developed in a web-based data access tool using Bentley GeoWeb Publisher and Bentley GeoWeb Solutions.

CROtec (Netherlands) needed to host their urban planning data and make it available for review and comment by citizens. Their solution was to host their data on the GMaps platform based on GeoWeb Publisher. This enabled users to redline and add comments which are then sent on to planners for review.

The department of planning and infrastructure, Western Australia standardized all their transportation related data on Bentley software in order to create a seamless data project for mapping and research purposes.

Dallas Water Utilities (Dallas, TX) used Microstation and Descartes to analyze the amount of wastewater entering their collection system.

Infotech Enterprises used Microstation, Microstation Geographcis, and Descartes software to create a massive digital orthomosaic @ .33 ft per pixel resolution along with 2 foot contours generated for a total of 3100 square miles encompassing all of L.A County.

The I GEO NET Project, LeMans Metropole enables 200 workers to share their corporate GIS datasets with the 1950,000 residents. The GIS data are made available via the Internet using a simple-to-use web application suitable for non-GISers to use. The users view data using Bentley Redline.

The Maryland State highway Administration created the 2007-2008 official highway map using Microstation and Bentley Digital Plot. More than one million paper maps are to be distributed to residents and visitors for free.

Using Microstation, The SGO Project Brazil, enables users to select an area of interest, add surface and sub-surface obstacles, then quickly and easily view and visualize inn a 3D environment.

The Auckland City Council planners produce 3D views of a proposed “liveable community” called Panmure to make better decisions during the consulting phase of the project. The team also developed fly-throughs to help visualize the development in 3D.

The FAA used Bentley ProjectWise to deploy a single, enterprise drawing management system that takes into account the workflow and data needs of all 10 FAA HQ offices. All of the FAA engineering drawings nation-wide are available by all their engineers.

Sandia National Labs uses Bentley ProjectWise and Bentley Geographics to maintain current and accurate as-built drawings for geospatial and building data covering an area of some 9000 acres.

The Port of Brisbane used Microstation to create a visualization of the swinging and berthing of the USS Ronald Reagan in order to have confidence in the procedure. Some 3000 TIFF files were stitched together to create a visual representation (AVI).

The Dutch Ministry of Finance use Bentley Geospatial Server to enable access to all administration and geographic data in one common interface. All of the Ministry’s legal documents are now spatially enabled and accessible to all users.

The City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin created and maintains a standardized geospatial land base covering 96 square miles. They use Microstation and Interplot to distribute data to their end users.

ADAC e.v (Europes’s largest auto club) has created a comprehensive travel guide that includes maps and descriptions of POIs. The tourset covers 44 countries in Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Maps are produced using Microstation, Microstation Geographics, and data from Navteq.

Microstation SewerGEMS and StormCAD are being used to model and analyze facilities to help complete proposed treatment projects in Mumbai, India.

Dayton & Knight Ltd. Completed and analyzed the West Vancouver water system using Bently’s WaterCAD software.

Brisbane Water has complete frequent fire flow modeling of the city for their fire fighting analysis applications.

Note: the above-mentioned are only some of the BE Award entries in the Geospatial category

This week I heard about these and many other HUGE projects, some of them so large in scope that it was almost hard to conceive the task at hand... imagine having to store and manage 900,000 microstation drawings, or stitch together 3000 3D videos into one big AVI flythough, or what about reclaiming 500 hectares of land in order to construct more than 18,000 homes, offices and schools in 6 man-made islands... that's exactly what Bentley customers are doing... and then some! This was my first BE experience and it definitely left me craving more. Unlike other solution providers Bentley has a host of applications and solutions... the list of Geospatial software products alone could likely fill a couple of pages! On the upside though, all their solutions are based on a single platform and they work well with each other and interoperate. Particularly impressive about Bentley is their innovative licensing program - local government users will really dig the Municipal License Subscription (MLS) designed to enable government clients to deploy their GIS throughout their organization... best of all pricing is based on the population of the city or town. Similarly, the new ProjectWise Passport provides Bentley ProjectWise users with a versatile collaboration license that is portable between projects and designed to facilitate collaboration and improve productivity.

The BE Award winners were announced at a "Gala" banquet and ceremony with a distinct "LA" and Hollywood Oscar feel!
