A heat map is a graphical representation of three dimentional data (X, Y and Value) on a two dimensional surface by using colors. How can I create a heat map? Perhaps you've asked this... here's one clever solution and an API thats freely available for you to use. Using the HeatMap API users can use it over the Internet or as a .NET DLL to run in your environment. You can also integrate heat map images into Google Maps or other GIS systems.
A free, restricted use version is available (max 500 calls/day) and a commercial version is available for a monthly fee (rate depends on usage). A commercial site license is also available.
From the developer: Heat maps let users quickly visualize density of locations. Some maps will show points, but being able to understand the density of those points makes it much easier to see, especially when using colors.
This solution from Geospatial Analytics Inc. gives users an API that enables you to create your own heat maps on your maps, in your application. The API includes: - free sample code for Google maps, but you can use the API with any system that can take a PNG file and overlay it on your map - The free license you can submit 100 data points per call, but the commercial license there is no limitation.
Sample use: This example shows the broadcast range for a cell phone tower based on signal strength data.
