GeoPerspectives aerial photography at the core of Calderdale Council GIS

Leicestershire, UK, 04 April 2007 - Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council has implemented GeoPerspectives aerial photography as a key dataset within the Council’s intranet based geographical information system (GIS) and public access online mapping service.
Covering the scenic Yorkshire Pennines, the high resolution aerial survey was flown last year using the latest digital imaging technology. It was chosen by Calderdale to update and supplement their existing base mapping, increase data sharing and encourage new and repeat users of the Council’s online mapping tools.
The GeoPerspectives aerial photography is available, via an intranet-based GIS, throughout the Council. Users in every department can access the imagery, at the desktop, to obtain additional detail, verify the location of ground features and communicate service information. “The aerial photography is creating a real buzz throughout the Council,” said Craig Moudling, Corporate GIS Manager at Calderdale Council. “The imagery overcomes barriers. Individuals are drawn to the photography and then, almost without realising, they are using the GIS on a daily basis.”
The aerial photography covers all 364 sq km of the Calderdale region, located at the heart of the Yorkshire Pennines between Bradford and Manchester. The imagery, purchased from aerial mapping specialist BlueSky, was captured in 2006 using the Vexcel Ultra Cam D photogrammetric aerial survey camera and was supplied to the Council as map-accurate digital image files with a ground resolution of 10cm.
Calderdale Council has also recently re-launched their online mapping service to improve the range of service information and base mapping available. Visitors to the site can choose from a range of base mapping, including the GeoPerspectives imagery, and then add up to eight different overlays depicting a range of leisure facilities, local amenities and Council information.
“The general public is becoming more familiar with aerial photography and satellite imagery due to use on TV programmes and other. What they don’t realise is that they can get more detailed imagery coupled with service information that is directly relevant to them, their families and their property,” continued Moulding. “The GeoPerspectives imagery is a real draw for our website, encouraging first time users and promoting repeat visits.”
