Location Provisioning & LBS, A Hot Topic at CTIA Wireless
Written by Glenn Letham (GISuser editor)
Monday, 02 April 2007 Clearly the wireless arena is vast ecosystem and for many tough to figure out exactly what's going on. Some of the trends and hot topics of discussion I noticed at the event were gaming, social networking, interoperability, local search, and location-based services.
Keep in mind that I went to the event seeking out the latest trends in LBS, however, it was hard to ignore the fact that LBS and location provisioning was pretty much all over the place... nice!
Some of the things that stood out in my mind that help validate the hype surrounding location include new devices shipping with integrated GPS (once again I bring up the Nokia N95 (see image right) and look at most of the CDMA handsets supported by the Sprint network); an explosion in interest in the Navteq LBS Challenge - with some 344 developers taking part in the latest contest; data providers like Tele Atlas reaching out to developers with programs link ContentLink, providing an audience and business opportunity for your data collections; carrier reps from companies like Verizon wireless responding to "what's hot" questions with a quick reference to maps, local search, and LBS; and companies like Google and Yahoo! promoting mobile maps and device makers like Nokia and LG announcing local search and mapping services shipping on their decks.
Clearly the framework has been set (almost) and now the carriers are looking for application and services that encourage data usage on their devices... enter the LBS developer and data provider and look around for business opportunities, clearly there are many of the out there. Finally, speaking of LBS, congrats to ComVu on taking the top prize in the LBS Challenge with their PocketCaster GPS application (pictured top left), enabling one-button mobile webcasting that embeds date, time, and location information in a live video stream.
