UND Geographic Information Science Graduate Certificate (Online)
Written by Glenn Letham (GISuser editor)
Friday, 09 March 2007 The University of North Dakota is offering students and professionals alike the chance tyo obtain a graduate certificate in GIS.. best of all, the program is delivered online making it available to a large audience. This 12-credit, online graduate certificate program in geographic information science (GISc) has been developed to help feed the growing global demand for geographic information systems professionals - recall the GIS profession was recently identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as one of the three fastest growing job fields along with nanotechnology and biotechnology.
About the program:
The UND Department of Geography worked with the Division of Continuing Education to design and deliver an online program targeted for working professionals. The first course covers computer mapping and cartography. Over the next year, students will receive GISc education, hands-on training, and exposure to GIS technology, including digital mapping.
"Digital mapping provides a great deal of flexibility compared to traditional paper mapping," says Rundquist, who will be one of the online course instructors. "Our graduates will have valuable skills sought after in many fields, everything from natural resources management to urban planning to facilities management."
The Department of Geography also offers an on-campus GISc certificate program that mainly serves graduate students in other UND academic departments, such as biology, space studies, and earth system science and policy.
To get accepted into the program, applicants must have bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a minimum GPA of 2.75. A new cycle of the GISc online program begins in June. Space is limited. Application review will begin April 1. For more information, contact UND Distance Degree Programs at 877-450-1842 or visit www.conted.und.edu/ddp/gis.
