Dr. Barry Wellar, Media Program Director for the Canadian Association of Geographers, reports that The Weather Network (TWN) is to include references to Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day in its broadcasts.
According to Dr. Wellar, Distinguished Geomatics Scientist at the University of Ottawa and President of Wellar Consulting Inc., there is a natural fit between The Weather Network and this week of intensive geographic and GIS activity in Canada.
"The relationship between TWN, Geography Awareness Week, and GIS Day came in a flash while watching a broadcast. Geography affects the weather; the weather affects Canada and Canadians; and, The Weather Network uses numerous maps and the power of GIS technology to present the weather story."
It did not take a great deal of effort to persuade TWN officials that it would be performing a great public service by contributing to the Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day initiative launched by the Association.
"Simply put, it was quickly agreed that Weather Network programs are based on making connections between the environment, weather, people, maps, and GIS. And, it was also quickly agreed that references to Geography Awareness Week and GIS Day mesh with the Network's mission of describing, explaining, and predicting weather conditions, and commenting on their consequences."
The fact that the CAG has been named a sponsor of GIS Day by ESRI Canada is also raising the Association's expectations for the Week in general and GIS Day in particular, says Dr. Wellar.
'Geographic Awareness Week and GIS Day seek to raise the awareness of geography and GIS in schools, but also among the public. The CAG is like a pin in a hinge, in that we are creating a link between The Weather Network and the GIS industry and community. As a result, over the course of the Week we will reach millions of Canadians in schools, offices, homes, stores, shopping centres, pubs, you name it. I believe that Canadians are going to be very impressed with what they see and hear."
