Eighth Annual GIS Day Across Canada Wednesday, November 15, 2006 PDF Print E-mail
Written by ESRI
Friday, 10 November 2006
Toronto, Ontario – GIS Day is an annual international grassroots event to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations.

GIS users will open their doors to students, co-workers, and the general public to showcase real-world GIS applications. Events will be taking place at locations across Canada (www.esricanada.com/gisday). Games, open houses, lectures, and a host of other activities will help engage people and create awareness about the important role geography plays in the decisions and actions of our governments, corporations, and citizens around the world.

Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (i.e. third week of November), GIS Day is a global event that celebrates the technology and extends awareness of its important contributions in science, technology, information, and the humanities. GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. The event is a reflection of the enthusiasm and commitment of individual GIS users everywhere.

More than 70 countries will participate in holding local events. A number of Canadian government organizations, businesses, colleges, and universities are taking part in this year’s GIS Day:
