PCI Geomatics, eSpatial launch on-demand mapping centre at NR Canada Innovation Acceleration Centre  E-mail
Written by eSpatial
18 October 2006
October 17, 2006 - Ottawa, Canada: PCI Geomatics and eSpatial are pleased to announce the official unveiling of their technology in use as part of the Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) National Mapping Centre.

This advanced system continuously gathers and processes pan-Canadian geospatial satellite and other data to generate and disseminate maps on demand. The Mapping Centre addresses the challenges of updating national map coverages, quickly disseminating critical information and meeting the demands of dozens of applications by reducing redundancy.

"The Mapping Centre automates many important map-creation tasks, thereby improving interoperability, data management and cost of ownership," said Dr. Robert Moses, President and CEO of PCI Geomatics. "Together, integrated systems from PCI Geomatics, Oracle and eSpatial make it possible to deliver critical map information quickly, efficiently, and securely." The National Mapping Centre was developed in collaboration with NRCAN, and made possible through investment from Industry Canada and PCI Geomatics. The system automatically ingests and corrects the best available sources of satellite imagery over Canada at optimum levels of accuracy, stores them in an Oracle 10g database, and outputs digital maps and satellite image maps. eSpatial's iSMART web platform is leveraged by the system by providing a management and delivery platform for the processed map data. Through a strategic partnership agreement, PCI Geomatics and eSpatial will build and deliver similar integrated image management solutions to businesses and governments worldwide.

"eSpatial is excited to be involved in a project that delivers the latest satellite images and other mapping data over the internet using web services or from a standard web browser," said David Miller, COO of eSpatial. "The Mapping Centre project illustrates the way national - even global - systems can be developed to automatically deliver highly specific, secure and up-to-date information on demand."

The October 18 launch event is part of an Enterprise Ireland trade mission to Canada promoting innovative technology exchanges between Ireland and Canada. The Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micháel Martin and The Canadian Minister of Natural Resources, The Honorable Gary Lunn will be present at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
