Sir Sanford Fleming College - Post-Graduate Education and Training in GIS Posted on December 07, 2005 Sir Sanford Fleming College... aka Fleming College has several programs focused on training GIS professionals. Commencing in January 2006, the College is offering the following programs: Geographic Information Systems - Applications Specialist; Geographic Information Systems - Cartographic Specialist; Geomatics Technician. The programs are designed to train students using state-of-the-art technologies including software from ESRI, Autodesk, PCI Geomatics, and CARIS. Work experience will be gained doing experiential work - putting theory into practice. An internship program will provide practical experience and lead to valuable industry contacts.
This past fall, a new GIS for Educators online graduate certificate program was added to the schedule at the Geography Dept., Eastern Michigan University . The program has been written for K–12 teachers specifically with a focus on what teachers need to know in GIS. The certificate addresses classroom concerns and implementation of GIS and adapts teaching methods to include GIS into K–12 classroom curriculums.
To celebrate GIS Day 2005, the University of New Hampshire has a fantastic schedule of events. Chief Cartographer and Executive Vice President of National Geographic Maps, Allen Carroll will be speaking, the NGS will have a map display, and all in attendance will have a chance to win somme great prizes. This is definitely one of the more impressive GIS Day lineups that we've seen!

CMap - Community Mapping Program; Motivating Communities & Young Minds Through Mapping Posted on August 22, 2005
CMAP, originally developed by The Orton Family Foundation, sprouts from a desire to share the Institute for Technology Development's (ITD) knowledge and practical experiences with youth and their communities. ITD/CMaP was recently a Gold Sponsor for the ESRI Education Users Conference. They exhibited & attended the conference primarily to inform the education community about their new program model and to solicit sponsorship interest from hardware and software companies, imagery providers, and other federal agencies. CMAP is a great story about what 10 year olds can accomplish using GIS!
Earth Science Week 2005.. Promoting an understanding and appreciation of the value of Earth sciences Posted on October 07, 2005 Since October 1998, the American Geological Institute has organized this national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth. This year's Earth Science Week will be held from October 9-15 and will celebrate the theme "Geoscientists Explore the Earth". This is the eighth year that American Geological Institute has organized this international event as a service to the public and to the earth science community.
USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) Tracks Lewis and Clark Route Posted on August 15, 2005 To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition from 1803-1806, the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) has assembled a collection of satellite images that provides a contemporary view of the route that Lewis and Clark took from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Pacific Coast.
GIS RS Center, Miami, FL Posted on August 07, 2005 The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems provides students with an interdisciplinary background in GIS. The program consists primarily of graduate level courses in Geographic Information Systems with electives in related disciplines such as Biology, Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, Environmental Studies, International Relations, Landscape Architecture, Public Health, and Urban Planning. The Center offers focused training to County Government employees based on the specific GIS-related needs of their job.
NASA Launches New Hurricane Web Page Posted on June 01, 2005 Today, NASA launched an Internet resource page highlighting the agency's diverse hurricane research. The site opens just in time for the 2005 Atlantic Ocean hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 through November 30. The 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season will see named storms in the following order: Arlene, Bret, Cindy... hopefully we won't get too far down the list this year!
USGIF University Scholarship Program Posted on May 24, 2005 Each year the USGIF makes available a number of scholarships to elligible students. To qualify, a student must be enrolled in a related field. This year, the Foundation expands its scholarship program to include graduate and undergraduates students in a field related to geospatial intelligence, as well as to graduating high school seniors who will be pursuing an undergraduate program of study related to geospatial intelligence.
