Central Florida GIS Posted on August 05, 2005 The CFGIS initiative seeks to increase coordination among users of geographic information systems in Central Florida. Its two primary components are a regional users group and a data clearinghouse. The portal provides access to community message boards, data, and other useful user resources.
The GLCF develops and distributes remotely sensed satellite data and products concerned with land cover from the local to global scales. This fabulous resource is a must visit for anyone seeking small scale Global coverage for large areas. Data holdings include Landsat scenes, MODIS, ASTER, Quickbird imagery (high res) and SRTM DEMs. Primary data and products available at the GLCF are free to anyone via FTP.
DigitalGlobe targets CitySphere at GIS users & planners Posted on July 15, 2005 The Geospatial user community was presented with another high-res imaging option this week thanks to the crew at DigitalGlobe. Offered as 60-centimeter (two-foot) resolution, color orthomosaics with 1:4,800 scale map accuracy, CitySphere products featuring these 200 urban centers will be updated on an annual basis. The updated imagery is guaranteed to be newer than 24 months. DigitalGlobe will release new worldwide cities monthly over the next 12 months.
Our continuing focus on State Clearinghouses & nodes continues with a look at S. Dakota. I'd hardly call this one a node or a clearinghouse but it's the best we can do at the moment! According to the NSGIC the State does have a plan to get a clearinghouse on the web.. a pretty good idea in my mind! South Dakota does have numerous GIS resources, however, a State node will be highly anticipated and greeted warmly by the users as well... read on for more on South Dakota GIS.
Processed SRTM 90m Digital Elevation Data (DEM) for the Entire Globe Posted on July 07, 2005 A great data tip came through to us recently from the ESRI Libraries newsletter... The CGIAR-CSI GeoPortal is now serving up processed SRTM 90M Global DEM data. Digital elevation models (DEM) for nearly the entire globe, covering most of the countries of the world, are available for download on this site.
Rhode Island Geographic Information System (RIGIS) Posted on June 24, 2005 The RIGIS mission is to monitor, coordinate, and provide guidance for activities related to the use of geographic information system technology in Rhode Island, to support initiatives to implement or use this technology, and to manage and provide access to a comprehensive database of geographically referenced information. Plenty of data is available including 1:12,000 true color orthophotography from Summer 2003 with a 1 meter pixel resolution... nice!
Oregon Geospatial Enterprise Office (GEO) Posted on June 22, 2005 GEO helps to coordinate GIS activities in the state, facilitates communication about GIS issues, and maintains the website that hosts statewide geospatial data for the State of Oregon, the Oregon Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (OGDC). GEO is primarily funded through an assessment paid by all state agencies. Their mission is simple... To provide statewide leadership in promoting the use of GIS technology and to ensure the availability of easily accessible, high quality geographic information.
The California Geographical Survey at CSU, Northridge Posted on June 21, 2005 The California Geographical Survey (http://geogdata.csun.edu) is pleased to announce the inauguration of its latest digital atlas for the Web - Nevada Atlas of Panoramic Aerial Images. The initial collection includes more than 500 unique mathematical simulations of the earth that display the state’s regions in a multitude of never before seen photorealistic views.
Oklahoma State Geo Information Systems Posted on May 31, 2005 Geo Information Systems personnel currently manage several enterprise scale databases including the Natural Resources Information System (NRIS) database and the Oklahoma Boll Weevil Eradication Organization's (OBWEO) database. Unlike many States that have a clearly defined State Clearinghouse, Oklahoma's repository is maintained by Geo Information Systems at the University of Oklahoma in support of the State GIS Council activities.
NOAA Coastline Data Posted on May 25, 2005 NOAA makes available a number of data products, most notably, hydrographic and coastal datasets. One of my favorite data extraction tools is the NOAA Coastline extractor. The tool searches several possible data products based on a geographic range specified by the user. Desired output can be optionally requested as ArcInfo, Matlab, or Mapgen and a compressed file is then presented for download. Data is derived from sets that range in scale from 1:70K - 1:5 million.
