Minister Lunn Announces $2.4 Million for Satellite Imaging Posted on June 23, 2006 Canadians will soon be able to access new, high-quality satellite images of Canada for free over the Internet. Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn today announced a five-year, $2.4-million project of the governments of Canada, the provinces and territories to improve and standardize satellite images. Minister Lunn made the announcement at the 2006 Geomatics Leaders Forum in Ottawa.
Texas Hazard Mitigation Package (THMP) is a free online resource Posted on June 21, 2006 The Texas Geographic Society (TXGS), a not-for-profit corporation located in Austin, Texas, received a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Planning Grant (HMPG) in 2003 as a sub-grantee to the Texas Division of Emergency Management. This site is organized so that users can quickly assess their potential exposure to natural hazards by viewing summary maps depicting the historical frequency of those hazards by county in Texas. Users will quickly get a sense of their relative risk for these hazards.

North American Transportation Atlas Data Posted on May 11, 2006 One of the most popular, free transportation datasets available in the public domain is the North American Transportation Atlas (NORTAD) from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. These data span Canada, the United States, and Mexico with the following data themes: aiports, highways, railroads, water ports, border corossings, and more. Once pulled from the shelves several years ago for security reasons, these data are now available via simple download (1:100,000 base scale).

Most recently, the online resource now offers downloadable raster navigation charts (RNCs). Also of interest, particularly to those needing electronic charts along the Gulf Coast, is the Coast Disaster Impact Website. Users will find electronic charts served up via a very nifty map server, enabling quick and simple pan and zoom functionality.
MAPdataUSA 3.0 enhanced US Census TIGER data Posted on January 29, 2006 Avenza Systems Inc. has recently announced MAPdataUSA3.0, a complete royalty-free library of enhanced US Census TIGER data in Shape file (SHP) format. Enhancements include joined road and water layers, proper name directory of states and counties, convenient 5-DVD package and concatenated road names to a single column for easier labeling and selecting.

The instrument is used to obtain detailed maps of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation.

Mapdex (www.mapdex.org) is a global index of 1,781 servers, serving 32,433 map services, containing over 400,000 GIS Layers, covering more than 4,000,000 columns. Taking it one step further, now you can even add a Mapdex toolbar in ArcMap providing you with direct access to the service. By default, the service returns hits based on a geographic search, resulting in servers providing access to DOQQs, aerial photos, and orthophotos.
