The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is pleased to announce the release of the TerraLook data product. GeoImmersive video from IMC - Terrestrial Views From Every Angle
Posted on June 27, 2007
Since 2005, IMC has been capturing 360 degree georeferenced spherical video of North America’s major cities enabling everyone to experience terrestrial views from every angle.  The company, currently getting loads of exposure for providing Google with their cool and sometimes controvercial Street View data has been driving the country in VW Bugs housing the IMC Dodeca camera which capture the 360 degree imagery. Initially developed for the energy and utilities sector, GeoImmersive video from Immersive Media Company (IMC) is being adopted by many users for many interesting uses.

Discover. View. Share. Retrieve... with TITAN
Posted on June 06, 2007
A signifigant announcement made at Where2.0 that may have missed you is word of the Leica TITAN Network. Simply put, this is a clever, online solution for sharing geospatial data in a single, secure environment. Driven by a nifty 3D globe UI, users enter a 3D peer-to-peer environment to discover, share, visualize, and access geospatial data. The company views this as an ideal solution for organizations to use to make their data holding available while also retaining ownership rights. Recall virtual GIS from Leica in 1996… delivering 3D content over the web? This goes much further...

Public Land Survey System (PLSS) data - download, connect, or stream into Google Earth
Posted on May 23, 2007
Looking for PLS data for your GIS? Here's a couple of very useful resources you should consider. These include the Land Survey Information System (BLM) - available via download (SHP) or connection to a web service - and a cool utility from Earth Point enabling users to specify a location and map the data using Google Earth. Requested data are extracted and provided as a KMZ.

Cities From Space - Landsat Images at your fingertips!
Posted on February 09, 2007
The Urban Landsat Cities from Space project is an interesting and informative resource developed by CIESEN, Columbia University. Using the interactive map viewer, users can easily select from an en extensive list of major cities around the World. Mouse over a city and a thumbnail will be displayed. Click the thumbnail to activate a control that will present a high-resolution image from the city of choice. For my test I selected New Orleans and was presented with a scene captured 9/17/2000. Right-clicking the scene enables me to download the image. Each city is linked to a jpeg image of a Landsat visible/IR composite collected by Landsat 5 (pre 1999) or Landsat 7.

NLCD 2001 - nationwide land cover at 30-meter resolution
Posted on January 23, 2007
The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium is a group of federal agencies who first joined together in 1993 (MRLC 1992) to purchase Landsat 5 imagery for the conterminous U.S. and to develop a land cover dataset called the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD 1992). In 1999, a second-generation MRLC consortium was formed to purchase three dates of Landsat 7 imagery for the entire United States (MRLC 2001) and to coordinate the production of a comprehensive land cover database for the nation called the National Land Cover Database (NLCD 2001). These data are now available via FTP download.

A reminder About the USGS seamless data server
Posted on November 03, 2006
In a recent reminder from a reader at the USGS I was kindly asked why I don't promote the seamless data server more aggresively.  I have to admit that I have neglected to evangelize this fabulous data resource to the extent that I should.
