Penn State World Campus Certificate Program in GIS

The Penn State World Campus Certificate Program in GIS is a noncredit program designed to meet the needs and busy schedules of full-time professionals. Students earn the Certificate of Achievement in GIS by successfully completing four courses. Most courses are offered four times a year, starting in January, April, July, and October. Most courses are ten weeks in length, involving approximately 100 hours of student activity (depending on your prior computing and GIS experience). Earn your certificate of achievement in less than twelve months.

Established January 1, 2004 - The purpose of the GIS Certification Institute is to provide those professionals who work in the field of geographic information systems with a formal process that will:

  • Allow them to be recognized by their colleagues and peers that they have demonstrated professional competence and integrity in the field
  • Establish and maintain high standards of both professional practice and ethical conduct Provide a basis for judging the validity of allegations or complaints involving GIS practitioners
  • Encourage aspiring GIS professionals to work towards certification for the purpose of professional development and advancement
  • Encourage established GIS professionals to continue to hone their professional skills and ethical performance even as GIS technology changes

University Consortium for Geographic Information Science
The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of GIS and the need for balance and cooperation among the disciplines listed below (and others). The urgency for such balance is so great that UCGIS commissioned a Working Group on Interdisciplinary Issues in 1997 to look at ways to increase diversity.
