Mapping the distribution of chemical elements county-by-county

Data from chemical analyses of more than 60,000 stream-sediment and soil samples from all 50 States are now available online courtesy of the USGS. These data will be used to determine naturally occurring levels of chemical elements in stream sediments, and to detect regional chemical anomalies that may affect human health.

The USGS has a number of clever ways for users to search, navigate, purchase, and download maps and data... the Map Locator is the latest addition and it's pretty darned sweet! Using a Google Maps UI, visitors search the map by entering a search string, zoom into an area of interest, or select a point on the map for relevant hits. The Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle (DOQQ) is an established product with the USGS and is another orthoimagery layer of The National Map. They cover an area measuring 3.75-minutes longitude by 3.75-minutes latitude or 7.5-minutes longitude by 7.5-minutes latitude.
